The Night the Lights Went Out on Thayer
Perhaps we should say “the week” (with a much larger radius than just Thayer Avenue), but anything more than 24 hours and everything goes down the shitter anyway. I managed to snag some freezer space from a neighbor for expensive meat-stuff, but at least I have the opportunity to thoroughly clean and wipe down the inside of the refrigerators. Luckily, I had just taken these off the grill before the rain started, which made the immediate impact of the power outage a little less painful.
Ironically, Pepco’s site went down, too, but it’s back online with these sad statistics (as of 12:30pm on Tuesday):

We heard the term “multi-day event” on Sunday night, but the ramifications of that are really starting to hit home. The cool air through the open windows this morning was nice, but if those birds sit right outside again at 5:00 tomorrow morning, I will reach through the screen and crack their tiny skulls.
Skateboarding Is Not A Crime
I was walking through the plaza last night and snapped a photo of one of these new notices – of which there are many.

My daughter has become greatly enamored of skateboards now, which I’d gladly promote. But as she was running at full-tilt across the ice rink concrete slab, there were very nearly several collisions with many of the other stir-crazy kids out there. Add skaters into the mix, and I can appreciate the issues. That notice to the right of the metal sign tells you to go into The Box for more detail, which Silver Spring, Singular has documented here.
Stay cool out there. Hope the lights come back soon.

Pepco’s site is singularly unhelpful. Yes, I KNOW my power’s off, and so is my neighbor’s. Duh.
What I need to know is when it will be back on–or at least whether anyone’s working on the problem yet. I get that it will take a while, but it would at least be useful to know when they’ve assessed the problem, and then again when they have a crew working on it. Just issuing blanket “most back on by Thursday, others by Friday, some a few days longer” statements to the media doesn’t tell me much of anything at all.
I’m not asking for a commitment to a specific date, but just knowing whether they’re working on things in my area would make me much less cranky. (As would having cold beer and a working hairdryer, but that’s another issue…)
Feel free to come over since we have power.
Call Pepco. I don’t have the number handy, but in the past if you call they tell you, almost, exactly when it will be restored.
This is the first time I’ve been spared the outage. Lost it for 7 days for the hurricane, 3 days for the blizzard, and about 5 years ago lost it for 4 days for a thunderstorm. Not all luck though as I lost my AC last week. To be fixed next week.
Wish the library was finished so I could sleep there. Skateboard and drink without a permit too…
Power back on yet?
Nope. At least when I left this morning it was still out. And Pepco has thoughtfully changed their estimate from Friday at 11:30pm to Thursday at 11:30pm.
and the section of tree is still blocking our road, leaning precariously and heavily on the power lines across the street.
