The Bitch Woke Me Up
Well, it finally happened to me, too. At approximately 1:52AM this morning, my doorbell started ringing incessantly. And I don’t mean a couple of little presses. I’m talking a full-fingered, 30-rings-per-second diatribe that sent my heart racing. I was a bit disoriented and took my time walking downstairs to peek out the window. Without a thought, I assumed it was the woman I mentioned last week. By the time I tried to surreptitiously look out the blinds, she was gone.
I called the Montgomery County Police non-emergency number (301-279-8000 – put it in your cell phone *now* if you haven’t already), and I wasn’t the first person that had called. Someone else was kind enough to submit a description:
- Black
- Female
- 5′0″-5′2″
- Chubby/Obese 140-170lbs
- Smoker (could tell by smell)
- Pleasant voice, no ghetto accent
- Late 20s to early 30s
- And she spoke like she’s anxious or in a hurry when talking to you
There was also a black SUV parked on the corner of Thayer and Houston that may or may not have contained an accomplice. And here’s the kicker: she told someone she had locked her keys in her car, yet she was carrying a set of keys.
I hope she was picked up by the cops, because if she tries to pull that shit again, there will be an entirely different outcome.

“no ghetto accent”
We got a knock on the door last night too! R. got a look at the person who had turned around and left and it matched the description posted on the ESSCA listserv.
It was totally annoying to be woken up in the middle of the night like that. Definately disturbing the peace.
Add that to the fact that I had just watched “The Lives of Others” about the East German Stasi spying on dissidents, and I had a hard time falling back asleep.
I’m assuming it means she didn’t “axe” them a question.
Well gawd, at least she was well spoken. I’d hate to think we have linguistically challenged “pan handlers”. Maybe Obama can find her a Green Job….
I’m waiting for this to turn into a Silver Spring, Singular-type tirade comment thread now. Oddly enough, he even started it.
A bit outside of scope, but a question for everyone here. My family is considering a move to East Silver Spring.
How safe is the area (as a point of reference, we live in downtown Adams Morgan now. That said, it’s not much fun to have panhandlers ring your doorbell at 1AM!)?
At this point, do they know where the Purple Line will go, and which streets will be disrupted?
And, is the water project on Thayer Avenue – which it sounds like will go through August 2011 – connected to the Purple Line project?
Thanks, and great website!
So what’s the consensus here? Is she trying to scope out empty homes as prelude to a break-in, or is she just nuts?
By the way, if any of you intrepid bloggers have time, there is an Ehrlich photo-op happening on Hellsworth Drive now, by the fountain.
@Springvale: Maybe, yes, and for pure panhandling enjoyment, I suppose. Give Ehrlich a kick in the medulla for me.
@MAS: I have to say the area is as safe as any other – safer than Adams Morgan, perhaps. Every neighborhood has its weak points, but living in the city you know you just have to be smart about where you walk when.
Lots of kids here, great things for families to do – I highly recommend the area. I would think most others would, too. Just get ready for crotchety old neighborhood association people.
As for the purple line, look here for details: http://www.purplelinemd.com/
I’m pretty sure the water main work isn’t necessarily connected to the Purple Line work. As far as I know, it’s just regular upgrades to an aging infrastructure.
Come on over!
Thayer,
Just wanted to let you know that I appreciated your satiric headline. And I agree with your response to MAS: Silver Spring is a fine place to live for families, especially during Halloween, what with the amazing decorations on Springvale Road that nobody should miss.

This is sad because this is the woman I’ve seen on Thayer, and at my front door, carrying around a 2 year old girl. At first I was tempted to help her with her request for a ride because it sounded just a few blocks away and it was so hot out and she was carrying this kid. But as I asked her to explain again where she and her daughter were trying to go, I realized she wasn’t making sense and seemed to be asking me to drive her 20 minutes away. Hope the kid is alright.
Are you sure it was a real child? Panhandlers have been known to carry fake children. I’d like to hear more about how she smelled. Was it a menthol or filterless cigarette smell? We could crack the case wide open if enough of us are just observant…Montgomery cops often rely on smell as an identifier.
MAS,
The house at 804 Thayer is on the market.
Definitely safer than Adams Morgan, which is good for a shooting every few months. That kind of thing is rare here.
