Frank Morales Gone from Jackie’s Already?
Tom Sietsema, the esteemed Washington Post food critic (whose job I so envy) reports via Twitter that Frank Morales has left Jackie’s Restaurant already. Tom’s tweet (in 140 characters or less):
Every critic’s nightmare: Chef leaves before review runs. In other words, Frank Morales is gone from Jackie’s (& I have no column for 2/28).
After, what, a couple of months? This can’t be good. Stay tuned for the backstory.
In other news…
This photo from the Paul Sarbanes Transit Center Project was sent in by that hackjob reader Bonifant More Sinister Than Thayer:
While I knew this was happening, seeing a sign like this is 10,000 kinds of awesome. We must get good video of the blasting action to post.

Thayer?!? I hardly know her!!
I wonder if Morales was there last Saturday. I got the sense he hadn’t lived up to expectations.
Not sure the back story on this either but Jackie did show up at the South Silver Spring Neighborhood Association’s meeting last night to provide food for everyone. Sounds like the great menu will still stay and they’re moving forward with opening the new bar and music lounge in a few months.
She also let us know that for those of us who get cabin fever this weekend – Jackie’s is open tonight with drink discounts getting better as the snow gets higher – and Quarry House is open the entire weekend with specials as well.
I walked through the new bar and lounge space last weekend, and it looks awesome. Great hardwood floors, marble bar, huge chandeliers – can’t wait. And thank God for the Quarry House when it snows, eh? Thanks for the update, Jason.
Maybe he couldn’t handle the culture at jackies that doesn’t seem to focus on customer service or value. I don’t mind paying $100 for dinner for two, but jackies has consistently proven to not be worth the money.
I have a love affair with Jackie’s. I take all my out-of-towners there, and we all leave happy, every time. My husband and I have a running joke that if we ever get in a nasty fight, I’ll storm out and go straight to my favorite server’s section to seek comfort in food, drink and service. Last night’s meal there was the first time I left with any complaint (ease up on the salt, guys, I have enough on my sidewalk). We await a new chef with baited breath…
Maybe the new chef will deign to make one meatless dish!!
