Mayorga, Meet Takoma Park
There’s been some buzz recently about Mayorga moving somewhere in Silver Spring, once they announced they were closing their Georgia Avenue coffee shop. Word has it, though, that they’re bailing on Silver Spring for the time being and setting up shop in the People’s Republic of Takoma Park. Assuming this is true, this surprises me some and none, all at once.
None, because it’s close, the people of the Republic tend to treat local businesses well, and nothing goes better with the scent of patchouli than coffee. On the other hand, I rarely drink coffee without a big slab freshly seared foie gras. They go so well together. But they frown on that there. And they don’t like me anyway because I think East Silver Spring should not designate itself as an historic district, much like the one those people came in and pushed at an ESSCA meeting some time ago.
Don’t get me wrong: I’m happy for Mayorga. I really am. But for the sake of the people in Takoma Park, I hope that the food is better, they provide more vegetarian and vegan options (because nothing tastes better than fried vegans), and the service is less sucky than what I’ve experienced over the past several months. I will say it could be a great complement to Mark’s Kitchen, one of my (seriously) favorite places in the greater DC area. And I hope they continue to serve the booze. That was a bonus. I might actually trek down there for that.
Otherwise, it’s Highland Origin for me.

Thanks for the post. I was beginning to think I was the only one who didn’t think Mayorga was all that special. I was never impressed by it, then made the mistake of taking part in their Sunday brunch.
I do, however, mourn the passing of any SS business. Sigh.
Good riddance I say. I like Mayorga coffee, really I do, but it stopped being worth it to me a while ago to go to that location and put up with really bad service, even worse music (and I’m a musician my trade, I give a lot of leeway for artistic license), and parking that’s inconvenient at best (though I usually walked.) And don’t even get me started about the whole “bar” debacle they tried to pull off. Gah.
Sir, speaking as a vegan, I take umbrage at your suggestion that vegans be fried. We vegans care about our health and recommend steaming us lightly instead.
You know what would be nice? If Mark’s Kitchen moved into DTSS.
Best of luck to them, but Restaurants don’t do too hot over there. Savoy Cafe recently closed and the restaurant space across from Mark’s Cafe has been empty forever.
I would love it if Mark’s Kitchen opened up a place here. And my apologies for the frying implications. I should know better. I actually tend to order vegetarian stuff at Mark’s Kitchen just because they do such a good job at it.
Eric, no problem. I thought it was funny.
It would be great if Mayorga were to open up in the spot where Talianos used to be on Carroll Avenue. That place has been vacant for quite some time and the restaurant planned for there by Gillian Clark (owner of the Post Office and formerly of the Colorado Kitchen) has not panned out. Or the space that was formerly Savory could use another tenant.
Does Highland serve Fair Trade coffee? My wife and I went once and found it decent, but we haven’t been back because we couldn’t confirm that it was free trade.

don’t get there often, but Mark’s Kitchen is one of my favorites as well. Would love to see it in DTSS.
