Halloween in July, and the Fenton Market

halloween store

Sure, it’s only July, but we’ll need plenty of time to find costumes this year. How nice of the Halloween Adventure Costume Super Store to open up so early. Well, not open, per se, but starting their setup. It’s like seeing Christmas decorations in Target in September (which *does* happen from time to time).

In other news, there’s been a lot of East Silver Spring listserv chatter about the new Fenton Street Market going in on the parking lot at Fenton & Silver Spring Avenue. Right now it’s only slated to be open September 12 and October 3 as a sort of trial run to gauge viability. If it works, it could be a (semi)permanent fixture, until someone else comes in and pays more dough, of course. The property is owned by Fenton Group LLC, who also owns the two houses next to it. That entire area will (eventually) be the footprint for the Moda Vista Silver Spring Park development. (A good write up from our very own Ned Flanders Jerry McCoy on the subject)

The question is: Will people schlep all the way down there from the Farmers’ Market? I have a feeling the answer will be no, but I hope I’m wrong. Perhaps if some of the neighborhood boneheads would quit moaning about underground garages (it *can* be done right) and building height (increase it, for crying out loud) in the Fenton Plaza development, we could get the thing built and get more foot traffic down there.

And thank you, County Council, for another good decision: Getting rid of the footbridge.

That is all.

Halloween is the best holiday and should be celebrated year round.

Fingers crossed for the Fenton Street Market!

Alas, the Halloween store stuff tends to be pretty expensive until their post-Halloween sale, and dammit, I’m usually working when all the good stuff gets sold then (stay at home Halloween parents? Demented senior citizens?).

So, does anyone have any mannequins they want to sell me? Seriously. Halloween is a’comin’, and I’m a’plannin’.

Thanks for the heads up on the FS Mkt. I was not aware it was coming. I was hoping maybe to get it on it with some of my homemade pasta and jarred tomato sauce. But damn those MoCo health code laws, they won’t certify my home kitchen! Maybe I’ll just turn my ravioli into disposable earrings. And when you’re done wearing them for the evening, they turn into a late night snack.

For any of you marking these dates in your calendar, please note that the 3rd annual South Silver Spring block party is also on Saturday October 3rd.

Put me down for some pasta and sauce, SoCo.

Evan – let me know when you have more details and I’ll post here, too. Saw the write-up on the site. Looks great. Will certainly be there.

Oct 3 is ALSO City Paper’s Crafty Bastards – not in SS but Adam Morgan – I hope to hit all 3 events that day :-)

I’d like Silver Spring to have a regular flea market à la Georgetown. There are plenty of surface lots that can be used.

Sligo, I believe that is the ambition of this Fenton St Mkt – we HAD a great SS Flea back in the day (pre-Whole Foods) and I furnished most of my apt back then with those finds – still have an antique Princess phone I bought there for like $2 that I use all the time.

See, now you have to post a photo. What color? I’ve been on the lookout for an original black Cortelco traditional phone.

I have that phone in red.

Though mine is vintage. Western Electric, I think. Yay, estate sales.

I also have a Western Electric 354, which not only works great but can be used to beat home intruders unconscious thanks to its hefty handset.

Um is that what u call vintage? I remember using those phones when i was growing up. And im not vintage!

  14. Eric July 28th, 2009 12:48 pm

I have a 1987 Volvo, and the state of Maryland considers *that* old enough for vintage plates. I guess it’s all relative.

And I would certainly want an original of those phones – nice and heavy. There was a movie (or two) where someone got clocked upside the face with one of those phones. Can anyone name it?

Are you thinking of Midnight Cowboy? Though there was more than just getting clocked, as I recall. Jon Voight’s character shoved the receiver halfway down the guy’s throat.

From what I see at loacl flea mkts/antique stores & sales: collectible is 25+, vintage is 50+ years, antique 100+

My “vintage” phone is quite heavy and could do serious damage — the only prob I have with it is no way to turn off the ringer or adjust the volume – so when it rings, it RINGS. I suppose I could unplug it at night but I’m sure I’d bever remember to re-plug it back in the phone jack in the AM.
