Isn’t that Rockville?

NoBe

A trip up Rockville Pike this weekend revealed a new area near Nicholson Lane: NoBe (North Bethesda). And I saw additional North Bethesda/Bethesda North development signs as far North as Randolph Road. It’s ROCKVILLE, people. This is ridiculous. I guess they figure they can charge more if they put “Bethesda” in the title. NoBe has got to be a JoKe. I fully expect additional useful terms to come out of this.

In other news:
Congratulations to Jerry McCoy and all the people involved in getting historic status furthered for Falkland Chase. Nice win – and I hope the County will make it official.

ditto on the designation for Falkland Chase. Those are some cool apartments, regardless of whether or not Eleanor Roosevelt used the bathroom there.

Now can we get that Harris Teeter to replace the Worst Safeway Everâ„¢ in Fenton Grotto?

By the way, did you catch someone on the ESSCA listserve dissing the library project? I knew the NIMBYs have jumped the shark, but that one should get an award.

Didn’t you know that everyone wants to live in Bethesda.

I’m going to assume that makes us EaBe?

Re: Library project. It was described on the ESSCA list as a “mega project” as if it were the second coming of National Harbor or the American Dram Mall. I think some of my neighbors and I have different perspectives on what is in the public interest for Fenton Village. I think that it is very much in the interests of the residents of East Silver Spring for the County to buy out the businesses on the future library site in order to build a bigger, better public library on land that is closer and more accessible to Downtown Silver Spring and Metro as well as to the surrounding small businesses. I’m sorry that some businesses had to relocate, but others nearby may benefit from the additional people that the library will draw as well as from the residential component that will be a part of the project.

I believe that the public good that will be derived from
a library on this site far exceeds the current value to the public of the site’s most prominant occupant, the Golden House.

God forbid one of the 1500 hair and nail places in Silver Spring might have to move a block away.

If that was still a Little Tavern, *then* we’d have to have some discussions about the necessity of a new library.

All of a sudden, I’m hungry.

For Silver Spring, I think a more snappy and more accurate name (than EaBa) would be ECHECHA (east of Chevy Chase)…we all know that Chevy Chase is tonier than Bethesda, and besides, this acronym sounds Spanish :-)

What, didn’t you know? “NoBe” is been the “In” word to use. I notice that around the region people prefer being north of things than south (North Bethesda, North Potomac, North Silver Spring?). Or perhaps the more desirable suburbs are always south of where you are. When names are worth so much, you can’t fault someone for being a poseur.

That is North Bethesda cause Randolph is the dividing line between the incorporated Rockville and unincorporated areas under County rule.

Now Midtown Bethesda North by KSI has really crossed the line (pun intended). That building is well within Rockville. http://www.midtownbethesda.com/

The Golden House didn’t get historic status?

  11. Thayer Ave., too December 10th, 2007 11:15 pm

How about WEBe– Way East Bethesda? Just one of the advantages of being unincorporated– our borders can be wherever the heck we want them to be!

I don’t know who the heck the NoBe people think they’re fooling– one look out the window onto Rockville Pike and you know you’re not in Bethesda.

On a related note, our house on Thayer was listed as being in Woodside when we bought it. How much did THAT little flight of fantasy cost us?

I also like that houses for sale are presented as being in “Chevy Chase, DC”.

I think Brightwood and Shepherd Park in D.C. should start calling themselves “South South Silver Spring.” They could use the increase in property values.

    Or SoSoSiSp for short.

Uhoh, Bonifant, just gotta stand up to say I hope you weren’t serious about our Safeway! Yup, they’re a little understaffed at times, but it is a great neighborly affordable place to shop, with very friendly and helpful staff. I for one would be sad to see my local Safeway lose out… although the building itself? I sure hope it’s not next on Jerry’s plan!

I thought that area was actually Kensington? Notice how White Flint’s address has drifted over the years?

I, as one East SSer, cannot WAIT until that library is done and several blocks nearer to me.

Shep Park getting HIGHER property values? Have you been to any real estate viewings there??!!

As to Harris Teeter, keep Safeway or maybe replace it with Shoppers for all of us budget-minded SS natives. Put Harris Teeter in the bottom of that monster building on E-W Hway across from DiscoveryTech — where it was originally slated as I recall and makes perfect sense. I’ll visit for special occasion purchases, but certainly would not be my daily/weekly grocery supplier.
