Bonifant More Sinister Than Thayer?
Goth Talk’s Circy Nightshade and Azrael Abyss would have a field day.
Yesterday evening we were walking down Fenton when at least half a dozen police cars (and at least one fire truck) stormed onto Bonifant in front of the area where Thai Derm and Roger Miller are. Come to find out, a man was stabbed repeatedly with a screw driver during an argument that started over a parking space. From the venerable Washington Post:

Edward Banya saw a man in a car who appeared to be ready to pull out of his spot. The 28-year-old man was waiting for someone to return to the car, so he didn’t pull out right away. The two men got into an argument.
Police said Banya grabbed a screw driver from his car and stabbed the other driver multiple times in the hand and torso.
Who are these people? From the police blotter, it sometimes feels like the majority of non-theft-induced assaults in the immediate area stem from road rage incidents. Perhaps Banya mentioned something about Ovaltine. I mean, the mug is round, the can is round…
Also, apologies for the recent extended hiatus on ThayerAvenue.com. Part of the time was spent back in my old stomping ground of Alabama, and I got to drive by this sign for about the 420th time in my life – just north of Prattvile on I-65 between Birmingham and Montgomery. And while the sign’s been fixed up some since this picture was taken, it’s nice to know that some things never change.
It’s gold, Jerry… GOLD!

Damn, you beat me to this one!
I was totally bummed I didn’t have my camera yesterday. I actually looked at your blog to see if you had picked it up before I posted mine, as I was pretty sure I wasn’t the only one that would go the Banya route.
There was a car waiting behind me when I pulled out of a space in the very crowded lot at Harry’s Cafe (at Old Columbia and Briggs Chaney) and the driver had a very unsettling grin on his face – dare I even say sinister.
Reading this made me happy (for a second) that Up The Pike, walking is generally impossible and people will not get out of their car without much of a reason. Oh, well. As they say: two steps forward, one stab back.
It’s insane. And if they don’t get out of their car, make sure they’re not simply looking to use the car itself as a weapon.
I was in Adams Morgan a few years ago and saw an altercation up at 18th and Columbia. Two cars pulled over after much yelling and swerving, and one driver got out and approached the other (a cab, incidentally) swinging a tire iron. I left pretty quickly.
I bet the Mad DC Cabbie has some good stories – if he’s listening…
The Washington Post story also included this interesting piece of information:
“Inside Banya’s car officers say they found several thousand DVD movies. Banya was also charged with unauthorized selling of copyrighted recorded materials…”
So the alleged stabber was also operating a mobile Blockbusters. I wondered if he had a DVDs of Saw or Jagged Edge.
I managed to find a picture on Flickr of all the cops.
I’ve been telling you that Bonifant is more sinister.
Heard they were having happy hour specials on screwdrivers at the Quarry House.
This is blurb from Channel 7 was circulated on the ESSCA listserv last night. Very scary:
“Montgomery County Detectives are continuing to investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Silver Spring.
Police were called to the 800-block of Easely Street around 11:15 p.m. Friday night where they found 30-year-old Mark Ray on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. Authorities transported Ray to the hospital were he died.
Investigators say a possible suspect was observed fleeing from the area and describe him as a possible African-American in his 20′s. There is no further description at this time.
